From IAS aspirant to education Pioneer. “The Journey of Skilling Park founder…!

In 2015-16, while preparing for the IAS examinations, I spent a considerable amount of time in Goa. During my time there, I frequently observed children and young students selling items like papad and clothes on the beach. This sight deeply troubled me, as I pondered why these children were working instead of learning and experiencing the joys of childhood. This stark reality prompted me to return to my native state, Karnataka, with a renewed sense of purpose. I was determined to analyze societal challenges and seek solutions, particularly in India.
Upon reflection, I realized that the root cause of many societal problems was the lack of proper education. This epiphany led me to shift my focus towards the field of education. While I continued my IAS preparations, I also began to explore ways to make a meaningful impact through education. However, the question remained: what type of education was truly needed?

To find answers, I engaged in numerous discussions and meetings with people from various countries, including the US, Japan, and China. From these conversations, I learned that genuine education must resonate with the heart of the student. It became clear that curricula should be designed not merely for examination preparation but for equipping students with essential life skills relevant to their generation.

I scrutinized both government and private school syllabi and found that they primarily focused on rote learning rather than skill development. Recognizing the pivotal role of English as a tool for communication, I decided to develop a curriculum that included critical skills such as communication, time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, creative thinking, self-awareness, and discipline.

In 2022, I implemented this program, targeting rural students who often lack access to quality education and financial support. The results have been immensely gratifying, witnessing the positive changes in the students’ lives. We have designed our programs to be affordable, ensuring that even with limited financial resources, we can provide quality and skillful training.
As Nelson Mandela famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Inspired by this belief, we continue to run our program with the goal of transforming the lives of rural students. By providing them with essential skills and education, we empower them to build better futures for themselves and their communities.

The Problem

It’s a valid concern that the traditional education system often prioritizes exam preparation over the development of practical life skills. Rote memorization can hinder critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for success in real-world situations. Integrating experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum can help students apply what they’ve learned to real-life challenges. This could include projects, internships, and simulations that encourage problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. Furthermore, teaching essential life skills such as communication, financial literacy, time management, and emotional intelligence alongside academic subjects can better prepare students for the complexities of adulthood and the workforce. By reforming education to focus on holistic development, including both academic knowledge and practical life skills, we can better equip students to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

By combining language skills with life skills, you’re addressing the holistic needs of students, preparing them not only for academic success but also for success in their future careers and personal lives. This approach has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of students in India and beyond.
